Why Do You Want to Start a Business? A Real Conversation for Women Entrepreneurs

Support Her Journey C2 Your Health Women's Initiative

Let’s take a moment and ask a real question, mentor to mentee: Why do you want to start a business? Not the easy answer or what sounds good, but your true reason. The reason deep down inside of you. The reason that's going to keep you going, when it get's hard.

From a mentor’s point of view, your “why” matters more than anything else. It shapes your decisions, your commitment, and how you show up when things get hard and they will. Over time, you begin to see that women start businesses for many different reasons, and often it’s not planned.

4 Reasons Why Women Start Businesses

Over time, you begin to see patterns. Women don’t always start businesses the same way or for the same reasons, and often, it’s not planned.

1. Sometimes, it starts with an emergency. Something unexpected happens—like the loss of a spouse—and suddenly, there’s a need to create income quickly. There isn’t time to overthink. It becomes about survival, stability, and stepping into something new out of necessity.

2. Other times, it’s more urgent than sudden. A job is lost. Hours are cut. Something shifts financially, and now there’s a need to add to household income. The business begins as a solution—something that can grow into more over time.

3. Then there are those moments where it begins with a hobby. Something you enjoy. Something you’re good at. And people start saying, “You should sell this.” What once felt like a passion slowly turns into possibility.

4. Another powerful reason is the desire to solve a problem or fill a need. You see something missing in your community. You recognize a gap. And instead of waiting for someone else to fix it ... you step in and create the solution.

Consider this, woven through all of these reasons are deeper motivations:

  • Financial independence
  • Flexibility
  • Purpose
  • The desire to build something of your own

At the same time, it’s important to be honest about the journey. Entrepreneurship can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s not always easy, not always fun, and the success you are looking for will almost always take more time than you think. There will be moments of doubt, moments when things don’t go as planned, and moments when you question if it’s all worth it. That’s part of the process. It's call skill building, and personal growth.

This is where a mentor’s guidance becomes important. You don’t have to rush into it or put unnecessary pressure on yourself. If you have the opportunity, one of the best strategies is to let your job support your dream until your dream can support you.

There is strength and wisdom in building something steadily, learning as you go, and creating a solid foundation before taking the next step. Allow yourself the time to learn, adjust, and build a strong foundation. Your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Entrepreneurship is not a race; it's a build. Learn from your mistakes; this will set you up to succeed.

What matters most is that your reason is clear, your foundation is strong, and you stay connected to why you started in the first place. Because when your “why” is clear, you stay grounded even when things feel uncertain.

No matter where you started, whether it was out of necessity, passion, or purpose, you’re here now, right where you need to be to make your dreams come true.

Stay healthy. Stay connected. Stay you.
