Set Your Business Goals - Hot Small Business Trends 2021

A new year means a new start, and successful business owner uses this time to establish new  business goals for the coming 12 months. Too lofty 12 months? Then start with three month goals. Taking the right steps now will help propel you to achieve your goals throughout the year. It's like the lottery. If you don't buy a ticket you can't win! Same with business goals.

Let's go ahead and get started now.

I love new starts. To me an new start is an opportunity for a do-over. Do-overs are amazing! The beginning of the year is the time I review my entrepreneur business job performance, how well I set the pace, communicated our company vision, if I was a good boss or do I need a do-over, what needs to be better this time?

Then I work at my work performance, was I good employee for my company? For me sometimes I was a bit harsh on my employee (me)? Then take stock on what I did great, then I praise myself, and do better.

I review my company performance data, review successes and failures then look to the coming year for overall business improvements, possible creative joint ventures, collaborations, and community projects to connect to moving forward. I also look to mentors to share their experience with me, what new skills do I need to develop and who in our entrepreneur community can I reach out for help?

If you have not reviewed your business performance already, now is a great time to start. I review my business performance every month, all starting in January.  I research and review business trends, pivots, innovations, in my business category and nonrelated business categories for a 365 view.

Then I set the general course or direction for my business moving forward, knowing, and unknowing what the future will bring.

Here's what I do to start off the new year you can too:

1. Research predicted business trends. (see below)
2. Research expected business growth in entrepreneurship, in business categories and nonrelated categories.
3. Evaluate previous business performance from data I kept during the year.
4. Update my business plan and marketing plan.
5. Update my vision, what growth I see, and where do I see it.
6. If you are a goal setter, set your goals, if setting goals scares you set your expectations, forecasting, intentions for the next 30, 90 day goals, if you are comfortable set 12 month goals. I do both.
7. Make a list of activities (behaviors) I need to do every day, week that will move me towards our goals and intentions.
8. Write it down. Studies show if you write down your goals you are 42% more likely to make your goals happen.
9. Evaluate our business progress every 90 days.
10. Pivot swiftly, time is money.

To say that Covid-19 has been a game-changer for women owned small businesses would be an understatement. Research demonstrates women entrepreneurs, and women business owners have been the hardest hit economically. Facing financial constraints and other limitations imposed by the pandemic, most small businesses have had to come up with creative solutions to maintain a steady stream of revenue.

If you are waiting until business goes back to normal I have a feeling you will be waiting along time, and risk losing your business.
